INK OFF!!!

Hi guys!

I'm back for another blog post. Six months have passed since I finished my work with Suffolk Summer Theatres and I am now about to start work with Ink Festival which I have been involved with for the past five years.

Ink Festival, for those who do not know, is a new writing festival for emerging talent in East Anglia to have their work performed as either a play or film with the possibility to be developed. Throughout the year workshops are held for writers to learn how to hone their craft and develop scripts they have written lead by professionals in television, film, theatre and radio. Ink has been based at The Cut in Halesworth since the festival began five years ago and will be returning there again on April 12th, 13th, and 14th. Plays that have been performed at Ink have gone on tour at venues across East Anglia, the Pleasance Theatre in Islington, London, and have even been published.

Before that though, there was a competition on February 24th that I was asked to Stage Manage for where the winning play gets to win a spot to perform at this year's festival, this was the INK OFF. My work consisted of two days, one including tech/dress rehearsals on Saturday and performances on Sunday. Two groups performed Quiz written by Huw Brentnall and two groups performed Boom Busters written by Andy Durham. This is how it went!

Saturday
Today was an early start for everyone. I arrived at The Cut at 7:30am to help set up for the tech/dress rehearsals for three of the groups taking part in Sunday's competition. Helping today was Julian Windross, Trevor Alchin, and Theo Sowerbutts as part of stage management and technical crew. The first group to arrive were the Marina Theatre Youth Group from Lowestoft with their performance of Quiz. Trevor and Julian went through the lighting and sound cues with their director Abbie while Theo and I were on standby for whatever needs they required. They then had a run through at 10:15am finishing half an hour later.

At 11:00am, The Cut Youth theatre arrived with their director Joe Sowerbutts for their technicals with Trevor and Julian for their performance of Quiz. They went through there lighting and sound cues with Trevor. Theo and I needed to source some props for their show so we headed into Halesworth to do just that. We needed to find fake flowers (which we found in a florist ironically), prosecco bottle, soda water, and a carton apple juice to make a substitute for prosecco.

WLOG from Beccles arrived at 3:15pm for there performance of Boom Busters to go through their technicals with their director Emily.

Sunday
Theo and I arrived earlier than needed 7:45am, the Cut wasn't open, so we decided to grab a coffee in town. We came back to the Cut at 8:30am to wait for Headgate Theatre from Colchester for their technicals for their performance of Boom Busters, breaking at 1pm for lunch.

At 1pm the other three groups from yesterday arrived to register to perform in the afternoon. The competition kicked off at 2pm with The Cut Youth Theatre performing first to a paying audience and the competition's judges Julia Sowerbutts, Jane Zarins, James Christophers and Libby Purves.
Headgate Theatre performed at 2:50pm, Marina Theatre performed at 3:30pm, ending with WLOG performing at 4pm.
When the last performance finished, the judges went away to decide amongst themselves which group will go through to the festival. It was then announced that WLOG who performed their version of Boom Busters were the winners of the competition.
This weekend has been a thrilling experience, and I'm looking forward to what this year's festival has to bring in April. See you then!
